An Open Letter to the Successful Candidates in the 2015 Law Society of Upper Canada bencher election.

On behalf of the 1600 members of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association, I want to offer our congratulations to the successful candidates in the 2015 Law Society of Upper Canada bencher election.

In particular, I want to congratulate the Treasurer of the Law Society, Janet E. Minor, on her successful re-election as a bencher and acknowledge her continuing leadership. I would like to acknowledge and thank those candidates who put their names forward as candidates but were not successful in this election. They are to be commended for their commitment to serving the profession and the public interest.

This year’s bencher election attracted considerable attention from across the province. As an association, we wanted to ensure that there was a healthy debate on the issues and, in particular, on Alternative Business Structures. In the weeks leading up to the vote, there was interest in ABS on social media and various blogs as well as the two main legal weekly newspapers in Ontario. Members of OTLA were pleased that we had that discussion with bencher candidates and with the profession as a whole and acknowledge the work that will be done in the months ahead.

We look forward to participating in the discussion in the months ahead as Convocation considers this and all matters of importance to the profession.

Once again, my congratulations on your success today and for your upcoming term as Benchers.

Steve Rastin
President
OTLA
