OTLA Membership Criteria

Lawyer Members
Lawyers members of OTLA must: 

  • be licensed to practice law in Ontario
  • have their primary occupation as the practice of law
  • derive no more than 5% of direct billings or time from the defence of claims brought against institutional defendants, including insurance companies and their insureds, Boards of Education and self insuring corporate defendants, both currently and for the full six month period immediately preceding membership application
  • be committed and devoted to the concept of a fair trial, the adversarial system and a just result for the injured, the accused and those whose rights are jeopardized
  • be in good standing through the payment of periodic dues and adherence to the mission of OTLA

Out of Province Members
An Out of Province member must:

  • have the same qualifications as a Lawyer Member and be a resident outside of Ontario
  • they do not need to be a Member of the Ontario Bar to be eligible for OTLA membership
  • be in good standing through the payment of periodic dues and adherence to the mission of OTLA

Associate Members
Associate Members are approved at the sole discretion of the OTLA Board of Directors. They must be retiring or retired from the practice of law, or are temporarily removed from the practice of law due to parental leaves, illness or for other reasons that the Board of Directors may deem acceptable. If the Associate Member returns to the work force, or becomes employed in another capacity, the Member will no longer be eligible for Associate Member status, subject to the discretion of the Board of Directors.  They must be in good standing through the payment of periodic dues and adherence to the mission of OTLA.

Articling Student Members
Articling Students:

  • must be employed directly by firm of an OTLA member and working directly under the supervision of an OTLA member in good standing
  • cannot perform work for partners or employees of a firm which does not satisfy the OTLA membership criteria

Law Student Members
Law Students must:

  • be engaged in a course of study at a law school in Ontario
  • be in good standing through the payment of periodic dues and adherence to the mission of OTLA

Law Clerk Members
Law Clerks:

  • must be employed directly as a law clerk by the firm of an OTLA Member in good standing and working directly under the OTLA Member's supervision
  • cannot be engaged in law clerk or paralegal work for remuneration other than as an employee of the OTLA Member's firm
  • cannot perform law clerk or paralegal services for partners or employees of the OTLA Member's firm which does not satisfy the OTLA lawyer membership criteria
  • must be in good standing through the payment of periodic dues and adherence to the mission of OTLA
